ACT II

Scene 5

SETTING:  The dim and musty interior of the maintenance garage of the Golf and Country Club.

AT RISE:  The boys are sitting all around, waiting for CORKY to ignite his flatulence. CORKY is the center of attention, but the boys and equipment hide him from the view of the audience.  It is quiet.  MUSIC starts.

     31   “GARAGE GAVOTTE”

ELBOWS

              (Spoken; on cue)

Sorry, guys.  That was me.

                             CORKY

              (Spoken; on cue)

Nothin’!  Cut the noise in here!

              (On cue to SPIDER)

Whatsa matter?  You missed it.

                             SPIDER

I couldn’t get the match lit.

                             ELBOWS

              (On cue)

Sorry! I couldn’t help it.

                             CORKY

Get him outta here.

(Some boys around ELBOWS grab him and throw him out the door)

Showoff.

(MUSIC ends.  TOMMY enters and MULE motions to TOMMY to join him up high to watch the lighting)

                             MULE

              (Stage whisper)

Where ya been?  It’s almost blowtorch time.

                             CORKY

              (Talking to himself)

Come on, baby, come on… any time now.

                             TOMMY

              (Stage whisper)

I stayed ‘til the end of the game.  I was hopin’ we’d come back and win.  I guess two miracles in one day is…

                             SPIDER

              (Forcefully, but now loudly)

Hey!  Knock it off.

                             MULE

              (To TOMMY, in stage whisper)

What are you talkin’ about… miracle…

                             CORKY

We’re all waiting, baby… come on.
